The word Gown originated form the Medieval Latin name gunna.It is a loose outer-piece of clothing that may vary in length ranging from knee to full-length. Gowns are worn both by men and women; however for women it is applied as a full-length garment along with a bodice and skirt occasionally.
In the 18th century, informal coats, worn by men that were mainly long and loosely fitted gowns were called Banyan. In present the usage of gown largely revolves around the female gender. Even then, academics, judges, and some clergy are yet found to wear them.
